Those who know me, know that I love Women's Pro Wrestling. It's a hard genre to get right since it's usualy rougher and more technical than sexy slap and tickle matches. It's a step aside from catfighting because there generaly isn't any nudity but focuses more on the pure aspect of wrestling in the classic pro style. I've seen some pro style matches done nude which is very interesting but it wasn't the same. Well, here comes Special Events and their PGWA (Professional Girl Wrestling Association) matches. I've seen their adverts in the past and this time I went and sought out what looks like the full meal ticket, Tag-Team action, several matches on one tape and BIG NAMES! wow.. I certainly was NOT dissapointed with this tape! Here's why.
Special Events brought several top star of the past and some well know current women wrestlers to the ring for this tape called Powerhouse Explosion, aptly named for the big names. Leilani Kai, Susan Green, Peggy Lee Leather, Desiree Petersen, Riptide and Awesome Anne who appears for the first time in the PGWA. These women are amongst the roughest and toughest in the business. They've been there, seen that and got the T-Shirts. Experience abounds and the skills come out big time in the 3 big matches.
In the first match we have all 6 women; Desiree, Susan and Riptide face off against the heels (bad girls) Peggy Lee, Leilani and Anne. From the start of the match you can tell right away what the setting is going to be. The ref, no matter how hard he tries, never gains complete control of the ring as the heels consistently seperate one of the "faces" (good girls) and work her over in their corner while the ref tries to keep the faces in their corner. Typical scenario, well done and explosive! Leilani Kai gets top marks for her continuous trash talk and banter. Susan Green gets the royal treatment in this match as she is singled out for special attention by the heels. Half conscious after repeated beatings and chokings, she is pummeled senseless time and time again. Whenever she gains some sense of her surroundings she lashes out against whomever had her last, usualy one of the heels outside the ring. But she should have been paying attention to her real opponent who drops her in her tracks. Something funny happens during the match. Riptide, another rough and tumble lass, isn't too sympathetic to her teammates and doesn't seem to give it her all during the match. Holding up her own against the heels but not fully encouraging her team mates. Something fishy there for sure!
Later in the same match, Desiree jumps into the ring to assist her partner in trouble but accidently nails Susan Green! Ouch, not once but twice. Purely accidental. Riptide is beside herself with laughter at her partners' misfortunes. Riptide eventualy turns on her partners and pounces on Desiree, kicking the stuffing out of the lass. After the ref grabs control of the situation, and the promoter comes in to announce what has happened, the two antagonist Riptide and Desiree announce that they will square off in the very next match. Just like Pro Television shows of the past, the women do their TV promos in the ring. Desiree will teach the nasty Riptide a thing or two about team work! Susan Green and Peggy Lee Leather and scheduled to square off in the last match of the event! Notice I left out a lot of minute details of the match in general. There is simply too much happening to do this great match justice. You'll have to see if for your self!
In the second match we have Riptide and Desiree go at it. This one is a good round end event of classic moves and holds. Both women are fit and put on a good show. They both have the skills and tenacity to bring the art of "pro wrestling" up front again. A lot of great holds and moves.
The last match is the big grudge match between Susan Green and Peggy Lee Leather. These are not petite little gals. They are solid hard hitting, no messin' around women hell bent to destroy each other in the squared circle. Susan takes quite a beating in this match, getting knocked about and nearly rendered senseless at the hands of her antagonist. Eventualy, a "foreign object" is used and Susan is left in a bloody mess.. Blond hair and blood makes a horrific mess! It's gruesome! These two veterans of the ring throw everything they have at each other and then some. Power slams, chokes, forearm smashes to the chest and even having Peggy Lee standing on Susan's abs and chest, trying to squeeze all the oxygen from her devastated body. Eventualy, a winner is declared but not before the ref is tossed across the ring in an unflattering manner. Who wins this match? You have to find out for yourself.
If you're one of the many people out there who's asked that I do a classic pro wrestling review, this is the one for you. It's got all the elements we classic fans have been waiting for. The ONLY thing missing is the studio audience and all that screaming and shouting from ringside. (not counting Leilani trash talking hehe). Even the announcer has the banter and cadence down right. Just about everyone heard on the tape has that southern "you-alls" drawl way of tawkin.. The announcer helps bring the touch and feel of the pro wrestler feel.
I'm rating this great tape at a solid 8 stars. Bringing you the top names of Women's Pro Wrestling in a classic scenario tag team match gone one sided makes for a great hour long tape from start to finish. I love the true effort all the players put into their matches. For all the fans of "pillar to post" Doney Brook fights, you'll not be disapointed by this match.
